Parkinson’s and Medical Marijuana

Parkinson’s disease, or PD, is a progressive neurodegenerative condition that is classified as a movement disorder. This neurodegenerative condition slowly progresses over time and the symptoms experienced by someone living with Parkinson’s are unique to each individual. The cause of Parkinson’s is still unknown, but medical professionals believe that genetic and environmental factors may be the cause.

What Is Parkinson’s Disease?

Parkinson’s disease slowly progresses by affecting the neurons in an area of the brain called the substantia nigra. The cells in this part of the brain are responsible for producing dopamine but begin to stop working or die. The degradation of these cells may cause someone living with Parkinson’s to experience tremors, slowed movements, or bradykinesia, involuntary muscle movements, or dyskinesia, speech changes and more.

Medical Marijuana and Parkinson’s

The current treatment options for Parkinson’s are sometimes ineffective or produce undesired side effects, leading to patients seeking other options. Although more research is needed, feedback from prescribers, patients and caregivers has pointed to medical marijuana being a promising treatment option for someone living with Parkinson’s.

Medical marijuana may help with symptoms such as:

  • Dyskinesia
  • Bradykinesia
  • Coordination
  • Muscle rigidity
  • Muscle spasms
  • Insomnia
  • Pain

Texas OG Patients Living With Parkinson’s Disease

Kevin is a Texas OG who was diagnosed with Parkinson’s in 2015. He began to notice that he was having issues with balance and was starting to forget certain things. He was put on medication for a year but realized that he was not getting any better. Kevin decided to undergo brain surgery because his symptoms were not improving. After surgery, he began taking medical marijuana and noticed improvements in his ability to focus and be more present. Medical cannabis has improved his quality of life by allowing him to start driving again and spend quality time with his granddaughter.
