What is a Traumatic Brain Injury?

A traumatic brain injury (TBI) is caused by an external force or blow to the head. Although many people associate TBIs with sports injuries, they can affect anyone at any age. Other common causes include falls, vehicle collisions, and combat or explosive injuries.

Symptoms of a TBI vary depending on the type and severity of the injury and may include:

Headaches
Lethargy
Cognitive difficulties
Nerve damage
Stress
Anxiety
Memory loss
Seizures

How Does Medical Marijuana Help Traumatic Brain Injuries?

People living with long-term TBI symptoms are often prescribed multiple medications, each with its own potential side effects. Despite numerous clinical trials, there is currently no single pharmaceutical treatment for traumatic brain injuries. As medical marijuana programs expand, many patients have turned to cannabis to help manage their symptoms.

Some research suggests that medical marijuana may help relieve common TBI symptoms with fewer side effects than some conventional medications. It may also have the potential to improve cognitive function.

Cannabinoids, the active compounds in cannabis, interact with receptors throughout the body and may help protect the nervous system following trauma. Pre-clinical research suggests cannabinoids have neuroprotective effects and may reduce neurological impairment. THC has also been associated with decreased mortality among adults with traumatic brain injuries.

Although additional clinical research is needed, one study conducted by researchers at the Hebrew University of Jerusalem found that rats and mice with traumatic brain injuries experienced significantly improved recovery when treated with cannabinoids.

How Do I Get a Prescription?

Although traumatic brain injuries do not currently qualify for medical marijuana in Texas, some symptoms commonly experienced by people living with TBIs—such as seizures, spasticity, and peripheral neuropathy—may qualify under the Texas Compassionate Use Program.
