Terpenes and Medical Cannabis

Terpenes are the aromatic compounds found in cannabis as well as many other plants and fruits. They are the main component of the plant that gives off its distinct scent. Terpenes not only give off the scent, but they also play a role in the therapeutic effects of medical cannabis products.

What Are Terpenes?

Terpenes are found in the largest class of organic compounds produced by various plants and consist of multiple isoprene units. They are also one of the major components of forest aerosols. To put terpenes into perspective, when you walk into a forest and smell pine, that is from the terpene α-Pinene that is found in the pine needles of the pine tree.

There are over 55,000 isolated terpenes that have been found in nature, making them the largest and most diverse class of secondary metabolites. There are several terpenes commonly found in marijuana.

How Are Terpenes Beneficial?

Terpenes contribute to the many medicinal properties that medical marijuana provides. Their therapeutic effects contribute to the “entourage effect,” a term used to suggest the presence of a broader portfolio of terpenes and cannabinoids magnifies the medicinal benefits of the plant compared to the use of the plant’s individual components.

Terpenes may affect the experience of using medical marijuana in a couple of ways. First, terpenes may contribute to the overall feeling you experience when you consume cannabis, for example, feeling energized or relaxed. Second, they may provide therapy for specific symptoms. For example, a terpene may relieve anxiousness or inflammation for a patient.
