5 Symptoms Medical Marijuana Can Treat

From pain to nausea, here are five symptoms commonly treated with medical marijuana.

1. Pain

One in five Americans lives with chronic pain, yet treatment options are often limited to over-the-counter medications or potentially addictive prescription opioids. As the United States continues to face an opioid epidemic, many patients and healthcare providers have explored alternative treatment options.

According to a 2019 study, the majority of medical marijuana patients use cannabis medicine to treat chronic pain. Both THC and CBD possess anti-inflammatory properties and have been shown to help reduce inflammation, spasticity, and pain. Several studies have also linked medical marijuana to a reduction in opioid use among chronic pain patients, while another study reported a decrease in opioid-related deaths in areas where cannabis is legal.

2. Insomnia

Chronic pain is frequently accompanied by insomnia. Some research suggests that medical marijuana may improve sleep quality and reduce sleep disturbances.

A 2019 study evaluated how cannabis affected sleep in 409 individuals with insomnia. Participants reported improvements in self-perceived sleep quality after using cannabis.

Another 2019 review found that cannabinoids may help reduce sleep disturbances and nightmares associated with PTSD, although researchers emphasized that additional randomized clinical trials are needed.

Many patients also report sleeping longer with fewer interruptions after using medical marijuana to help manage their qualifying condition.

3. Spasticity

Spasticity can occur in conditions such as multiple sclerosis (MS), ALS, spinal cord injuries, traumatic brain injuries, and cerebral palsy. Along with its anti-inflammatory and pain-relieving effects, medical marijuana has been studied as a treatment for muscle spasticity.

One randomized controlled trial found that cannabis-based medicine improved spasticity in people with MS. Researchers at the University of California, San Diego also reported cannabis to be effective for reducing both spasticity and pain.

In 2014, the American Academy of Neurology concluded that THC is likely effective in reducing pain and muscle spasms associated with multiple sclerosis.

4. Anxiety

After pain, anxiety is one of the most common reasons patients seek medical marijuana. Anxiety disorders are among the most common mental health conditions in the United States.

Several studies suggest that CBD may help reduce anxiety. THC has also been associated with improvements in anxiety symptoms and reductions in the use of certain psychiatric and non-psychiatric medications.

5. Nausea

Nausea is a common side effect experienced by many people undergoing chemotherapy. Medical marijuana has been studied for decades as an antiemetic (anti-nausea) treatment for cancer patients.

A study published in 1975 found that THC demonstrated antiemetic properties and was significantly more effective than a placebo for treating nausea. More recent research has also shown that CBD may help reduce nausea.

Although research is ongoing, medical marijuana appears to be a promising treatment option for chemotherapy-induced nausea.
