3 Studies Show the Benefits of Medical Marijuana for Autism

For thousands of Texas families, finding an effective autism treatment without disruptive side effects can be a difficult journey.

Medical Marijuana and Autism Studies

In recent years, several studies have suggested that medical marijuana may help improve common autism-related symptoms, including behavioral challenges, mood, anxiety, and sleep quality.

One study involving 60 children with autism found that 20:1 CBD:THC medical cannabis was an effective treatment for behavioral problems. Researchers reported improvements in behavioral outbursts for 60% of participants, anxiety for 39%, communication difficulties for 47%, and disruptive behaviors for 29%. Parents also reported a 33% reduction in stress.

Another study conducted by researchers at Tel Aviv University found CBD to improve several autism symptoms. Parents reported improvements in self-injury and rage attacks (67%), hyperactivity (68%), sleep problems (71%), and anxiety (47%) after treatment with CBD oil.

A more recent study involving 188 individuals with autism found that after six months of medical cannabis treatment, 84% of parents reported a moderate or significant improvement in their child’s symptoms.

Although these findings are promising, larger clinical trials are still needed to better understand the long-term safety and effectiveness of medical marijuana for autism.
