Medical Marijuana for Cerebral Palsy

Cerebral Palsy (CP) is a group of disorders that affect movement, muscle tone, and posture. It is caused by damage to the developing brain, most often occurring before birth or during infancy. According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), CP is the most common motor disability in childhood.

Although additional research is needed to better understand the effects of medical marijuana specifically in people with cerebral palsy, existing studies suggest that medical cannabis may help manage several symptoms commonly associated with the condition.

Spasticity

People with cerebral palsy who experience spasticity often have muscle tightness, joint stiffness, and involuntary movements. A double-blind clinical study found that participants with spasticity experienced significant symptom improvement after taking 10 mg of THC.

In addition, a pilot study involving pediatric patients with moderate to severe motor disorders found that five months of medical cannabis treatment significantly improved spasticity, dystonia, sleep disturbances, and pain.

Seizures

Seizures are relatively common among children living with cerebral palsy. Several studies have shown that medical cannabis may help reduce seizure frequency in people with treatment-resistant epilepsy.

In one clinical trial, patients receiving an oral cannabidiol (CBD) formulation experienced fewer seizures, and two participants became completely seizure-free during the study.

Insomnia

Muscle spasms and chronic pain associated with cerebral palsy often make it difficult to fall asleep and stay asleep. Some research suggests that medical marijuana may improve sleep quality and reduce sleep disturbances.

A 2019 study examined how cannabis affected sleep in 409 individuals with insomnia. Participants reported significant improvements in their perceived sleep quality after using cannabis.

Many patients also report sleeping longer with fewer disturbances as pain and muscle spasticity improve during medical cannabis treatment.
