What is Peripheral Neuropathy?

Treatment options may include over-the-counter pain relievers, prescription opioids, anti-seizure medications, antidepressants, medical procedures, physical therapy, and lifestyle changes. However, some patients do not respond well to these treatments or experience significant side effects, increasing interest in medical marijuana as an alternative.

Medical marijuana may help relieve pain and other common symptoms of peripheral neuropathy by interacting with the body’s endocannabinoid system. Both CBD and THC have anti-inflammatory properties that may help reduce neuropathic pain, inflammation, muscle cramping, and stiffness.

A 2010 randomized controlled trial involving adults with post-traumatic and post-surgical neuropathic pain found that inhaled cannabis reduced pain intensity, improved sleep quality, and was well tolerated by participants.

Another 2018 review of randomized controlled trials concluded that medical marijuana may be as effective and well tolerated as many currently prescribed medications for neuropathic pain. Although additional research is still needed, early evidence and patient experiences suggest cannabis may be a valuable treatment option for individuals who have not found relief with conventional therapies.

Insomnia
Depression
Anxiety
Muscle spasms and tremors
Cramping and stiffness
